Valerian Its History, Cultivation and Usage

Valeriana officinalis, more commonly known simply as valerian, has been a staple in ancient medicinal practices and is still used by individuals looking to treat a variety of ailments today.

While its roots may best be associated as a remedy to help with sleep, they, along with its leaves, can also be used to help alleviate numerous other conditions as well.

DESCRIPTION AND CULTIVATION
Like so many other plants, the common names for valerian are plentiful and often regional or colloquial. The etymology of the word valerian is Latin. There is some disagreement though as to its origin.

Some claim it’s borrowed from the name of the Valeria region where it can be found, and others ascribe it to the Latin word for happy, strong or well.
