Diabetes: What We Know and Which Herbs Can Help

Diabetes (type 2) is a typical example of a civilization disease and a serious, widespread health problem caused mainly by an unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle.

Since 1985, the number of people with diabetes worldwide has grown more than 10 times. It’s often called the fastest growing health threat of our times and an urgent public health issue. According to the 2015 Ameri- can Diabetes Association report, 30.3 million people have diabetes. The World Health Organization projects the rates of diabetes-caused deaths will double by 2030.

These horrifying statistics are merely a sign of our times. As the comforts of civilization grow and become more and more accessible, people naturally become less active and more comfortable. But this doesn’t have to be the case. By arming ourselves with knowledge about diabetes and taking measures like eating less sugar, exercising regularly, and following a balanced diet, we can take back our health and our lives.

HALF THE PEOPLE DON’T KNOW

It’s estimated that one in four adults suffering from diabetes isn’t even aware of their condition. What’s worse are the possible consequences that this disease (especially type 2 dia- betes) may cause when left unchecked – blindness, kidney failure, or poor blood flow in the limbs, which may lead to amputations, or cardiovascular problems, which can even be fatal.

TYPES OF DIABETES: TYPE 1

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease which causes the patient’s own immune system to attack the cells of the pancreas – the organ that produc- es insulin. This causes the patient to be unable to produce insulin on his or her own. Type 1 diabetes typically be- gins in young adults less than 20 years of age. There is currently no known cure for it.
