Indian summer is back again, and the school year is about to start. And so I wonder how to make the start of school more enjoyable for our school and pre-school kids? The youngest ones especially tend not to be eager to leave the comfort of mom’s home, and they even get sick and cry. Apart from that, the big change to their daily routines and lots of new experiences and new environments plunge them into pretty stressful circumstances.
September is not an easy month for parents, either. They have to plan ahead how to harmonize work, children, and their potential free-time
In the midst of all that it’s very easy to get exhausted and have the hopeless feeling that you are just not able to keep up. That is why I have come up with a few tips and ideas of how to make this stressful time more enjoyable by the use of aromatherapy.
If your child appears a little worried about going to kindergarten for the first time, you can try this tip: choose two or three essential oils based on your personal preferences and use them as your perfume, or as an ambient spray at your home. Then, on the big day when you take your child to the nursery for the first time, give them a teddy bear or a toy scented with the same aroma. You can also make together a small ceramic aroma medallion and drip a few drops of the essential oil on it.
The aroma will not only keep your child linked up with their home and the scent of their parents but also help strengthen their immunity (studies show that inhaling essential oil aromas supports the immune system). Essential oils were used for similar purposes even in ancient times during epidemics, when doctors carried sticks with handles scented with essential oils. Every time the doctor was about to enter an ill person’s house, they smelled the stick to support their immunity.
Suitable essential oils
If you’re uncertain about which oil to choose, try lavender, thyme or marjoram. To boost your mood, use minimum concentrations – just as much as needed to detect the aroma. To strengthen immunity, use a slightly higher concentration. These three oils soothe the mind, evoke a feeling of safety, have a nerve tonic effect, and boost mental strength to cope with new circumstances. Essential oils need to be diluted into vegetable oil and used as an “oil perfume”, or dripped into a sprayer and supplemented with alcohol and water.
