Poisonous Healers: Datura Can Help Relieve Asthma and Whooping Cough

Datura (Datura stramonium) belongs to the Solanaceae family and is hard to miss.

The plant is noticeable not only due to its height, which can reach up to 2 meters / 6.6 feet (but tends to be around 1 meter / 3.3 feet), but also due to its white trumpet-like bloom.

The stem branches into gilled, pointy leaves, which have an unpleasant odor. The blooms are conspicuous, usually white, but can even be light purple. They are most beautiful in the evening and  remain closed during rain.

Datura starts to bloom around June and stops in September. Because the plants easily attract attention, they are especially dangerous to children, who may eat them. The fruit is a spiked pod that resembles a hedgehog.
