Food Supplements: Fiber

Food advertisements tell us fiber is essential for our health, which is true.

They also tell us, however, that we need to buy fiber-containing food supplements in order to stay healthy, which could not be further from the truth.

So what should we eat to supply our bodies with fiber in a more natural way?

What is fiber anyway? Chemically speaking, fiber is the indigestible part of plant-derived foods, com- prised of polysaccharides (especially

cellulose, lignin and pectin). It affects the function of the gastrointestinal tract and the absorption of nutrients and chemicals, such as fats or certain medications.

There are two kinds of fiber – soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber has a wide array of beneficial effects. It absorbs water and then turns into a gelatinous substance that wraps around pieces of food in the stomach.
